In 1984, I joined one of nation’s top law firms, Dickinson Wright PLLC, an AmLaw 125 law firm, now with more than 500 lawyers in 20 offices across the U.S. In 1990, I became a partner.
For 39 years at the firm, as a trial and litigation lawyer in hundreds of cases, I led teams of extraordinary lawyers and paralegals, clients and experts in a broad range of business-to-business litigation. In defense and plaintiff engagements, I served business clients throughout Michigan, and around the country, in federal, state and arbitration venues.
I tried more than 50 cases to verdict or award, and our teams fully prevailed for our business clients in every one of those trials.
Market colleagues and competitors have recognized my body of work with top peer-ratings, including Chambers Partners USA, “Band 1” (top five trial lawyers in Michigan) and the Michigan Super Lawyers “Top Ten” (from all legal disciplines).
Within the firm, I served as national litigation practice director for nine years, Deputy CEO and as a member of the board of directors and management committee. I learned how to run what is now a $275+ million law business.
Over the years, I have learned that: courtroom and litigation skills are not enough — business clients expect world-class resolution skills; “winning” also takes place in conference rooms, meetings, and personal interaction; and it is the client, not the lawyer, who defines a “win” for the business. A fair and reasonable resolution is “winning” for all parties and counsel.
Based upon broad and deep experience as a trial lawyer, I know how these complex business cases work, how much they cost, how much risk there is (and where it is), and how to value a case with a high degree of certainty (understanding all the factors that come into play).
I have longstanding professional and personal relationships with the bench and counsel, and that allows me to bring additional independent and fresh perspective and insight to guide a resolution process.
Successful service as a mediator or arbitrator requires experience, expertise, relationships, persistence, creativity and the ability to connect with business people in a dispute resolution opportunity. I hope and trust that I offer a combination of these factors to business people and their attorneys and advisors.
